I am a peach snob. I am a peach elitist. I am a picky, persnickety, PITA peach picker. In short, I am a narrow minded white peach lover. White peaches only. Yellow peaches, step to the left. DENIED!
Confession: yellow peaches are just not good enough for me. There. I said it. I love, love, love, love, LOVE white peaches in the summer. Mangoes and white peaches are the fruit highlights of my summer.
Am I being unduly harsh towards the yellow peach? They have good points, I suppose. Yes, the yellow peach is lovely to look at with all its beautiful orange and yellow colors.
Okay, they’re kinda like little balls of sunshine. Of course they smell nice and make great pies, cobblers and preserves. Yeah, yeah, yeah, they’re all juicy, sweet – or are they?! They’re not as sweet as a white peach to me. I just don’t like how yellow peaches have a slight astringent finish. Wait – you want that in English and not culinary geek-speak. Alrighty. I don’t like how yellow peaches have a slightly sour taste at the end. Bleah.
(I’ll eat CANNED yellow peaches with a big ol’ smile on my face, though. Hypocrite? No, no. It’s a different product. Eating fruit out of hand is not the same as eating canned fruit.)
Look, I gave them a fair shot. I tried and tried and tried – IN VAIN, I tell you, IN VAIN – to find a yellow peach that is as sugary sweet and as delectable as a white peach but I can’t.
I don’t blame myself. I blame the yellow peach! <point finger at yellow peach> SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT LIVING UP TO MY FRUIT EXPECTATIONS!!!
(What? You never had fruit expectations? Don’t lie! I know y’all gone out fruit shopping, saw something that looked oh-so tasty, bought it, took it home and couldn’t wait to eat it. Until you did and discovered your seemingly delicious looking fruit looked great but had no taste, a bad taste or just tasted crappy!)
OK, there are many varieties of yellow peaches and I haven’t tried all of them. Maybe. Just MAYBE there is a perfect yellow peach out there that doesn’t have any astringency to it. I have not yet found that variety. And you know what – I DON’T WANT TO! Step away from the white peaches and no one gets hurt, ok?
So there you have it. I am a white peach snob. You can have your yellow peaches, just leave me to my white ones!

ha, just had a white peach with my lunch today! YUUUUM!
i like the crunchiness of the white peaches…but gotta say, i got some mad love for the yellow peach too!! I don’t discriminate between the two…and I find the yellow very sweet indeed, without any astringent finish…maybe its the peel leaving a bad aftertaste?
You should stop by the farmer’s market in the parking lot of the Alexandria Courthouse to get fresh White Lady peaches if you have a chance!
Local white peaches aren’t crunchy at all – they’re softer, for sure. Almost like the texture of a ripe nectarine but not quite as jelly-like.
I don’t think it’s the skin that throws me off yellow peaches; I get the sour taste towards the end of the bite and not the beginning. Maybe it’s because I am a supertaster and have weird tastebuds? Who knows?
Still a white peach snob regardless! LOL!
white peaches rule! So do white nectarines!
